Neither Newcomer Could Snatch First Place at the Box Office
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
Sony and Tom Hardy are dancing their way to the bank. Venom: The Last Dance held onto first place for the third week in a row, with another $16.2 million added to its $114.8 million domestic and $394.2 million global box office totals. In a much-needed win for Lionsgate, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever barely edged out its competition to secure second place with $11.1 million during its opening weekend. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” Heretic couldn’t perform up to expectations and only snagged up $11 million during its debut, signaling a potential issue for the horror genre.
Don’t Move listened to the instructions in its title. In good news for horror (or at least streaming-specific horror), all of the top movies this week were specific to that genre, with Don’t Move holding onto first place, adding another 28 million views during its second week. Time Cut could only debut in second place with 22 million views. Finally, Hijack ‘93 was cleared for takeoff as it ascended from where it was last week to round out the “Top of the Top 10” with another 7 million views this week.
All eyes were binging Tyler Perry’s newest creation this week. Beauty in Black, which wasn’t even able to place in its debut week, topped the series chart with 57 million hours viewed. Territory also improved during its second week on the platform, with 36 million more hours viewed this week to snag second place on the charts. While still outperforming juggernauts like This is the Zodiac Speaking and The Lincoln Lawyer, The Diplomat could only debut with 27 million hours viewed, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”
Next week, Red One hopes that its star-studded cast is enough to propel it to big numbers when it debuts in theaters. I have a feeling their chances don’t look so holly and jolly, but maybe it will surprise me.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
