Red One’s Underperformance Forces All Holiday Box Office Hopes on Glicked
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
It seems like, once again, no one was interested in smelling what The Rock was cooking. Red One, despite a star-studded cast, brought in a measly $34.1 million domestic and $84.1 million globally despite its massive budget. On the other side of things, Venom: The Last Dance continues to be the little movie that could with another $7.3 million being added to its $127.6 million domestic and whopping $436.1 million global totals. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” was an extremely different holiday movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever which continues to perform admirably given its budget and faith-based nature with another $5.4 million being added to its domestic total in its second weekend.
Over on the Netflix charts, the holiday spirit was similarly alive and well. Meet Me Next Christmas debuted at the top of the charts with 18 million views in its first week. Time Cut was able to hold onto second place for the second week in a row, this time with 14 million views. Finally, Don’t Move suffered a bit of a fall with only 9 million views this week, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”
If you were looking to binge something, you were likely one of the millions of others who continues to propel the most recent season of Outer Banks up the charts. In its fifth straight week somewhere on the charts, Outer Banks climbed up to being the number one series with 77 million hours viewed. Arcane, despite massive pandemic popularity, was unable to recapture that magic years later, only debuting with 12 million hours viewed. Unfortunately for fans of the show, it seems Netflix might the right call in making next season the last one for The Diplomat, which rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” after failing to materialize throughout its first weeks.
Next week, the industry has all its hopes and dreams for any kind of holiday season at the box office on Glicked: a mini Barbenheimer-inspired combination of Gladiator II and Wicked. It’ll be fascinating to see when the dust settles in the coliseum who wound up defying gravity to secure the first place spot.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
