Word-of-Mouth Proves to Be the Most Powerful Weapon in Weapons’ Arsenal

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
Weapons was the talk of the town during its debut weekend, and was able to ride an incredible box office wave with very little paid advertising required. The new horror movie on the block (pun intended) was able to scare away the competition and amass $42.5 million during its opening weekend. That unfortunately forced nostalgia-play Freakier Friday to settle for a second-place debut of $29 million. The flurry of bad news just keeps coming for Disney, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” with Fantastic Four suffering a 60% drop and only adding $15.5 million to its $230.4 million domestic and $434.2 million global totals, placing it in the same company as Marvel’s fellow underperformers.
Adam Sandler and KPop Demon Hunters just can’t be stopped. They both held on to their respective spots, starting with Happy Gilmore 2 and its additional 40.8 million views during its second week. KPop Demon Hunters is approaching the all-time chart for movies on Netflix at an incredible speed, with another 26.3 million views this week alone. Any other week, My Oxford Year debuting with 24.6 million would’ve easily secured first place, but instead it had to fall in line, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”
UNTAMED’s fanbase is truly insatiable. Three weeks after the series debut launched, it’s still holding firm in first place with another 12.2 million views this week alone. One series that couldn’t find a way to take off as expected was The Hunting Wives, which, despite being based on a bestselling novel, failed to convert that audience into anything more than another 5.8 million measly views this week. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” it looks like true crime fans are just about ready to sail past Amy Bradley is Missing to their next spectacle, giving it another 4.2 million views on their way out.
Next week, Nobody 2 and Americana will be…. released. As the movie title of the former suggests, nobody will be seeing either of them, so I wouldn’t expect much exciting news to come from either of those titles.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
