Venom’s Last Dance Gets Decent Numbers at the Global Box Office

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

In a fairly slow week at the box office, Tom Hardy moderately succeeded in capitalizing on the lack of tough competition. Venom: The Last Dance debuted at number one with a slightly disappointing domestic total of $51 million but a somewhat impressive global total of $175 million, driven mainly by China. Unfortunately, Smile 2 had a sizable fall of 59%, with another $9.4 million for a domestic total of $40.7 million. Awards-darling Conclave rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with some decent traction at the box office, especially for a festival film, debuting with $6.5 million and sporting an impressive per-theater average.

The order of last week’s movie chart has been reversed, with romance topping scary stuff this time around. Lonely Planet climbed all the way up to first place in its second week on the charts, adding another 13 million views to its total. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, had to settle for a second-place start with 9.9 million views. True crime fans’ newest watch was Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare which debuted with 7 million views, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

If you were looking for something to binge, you likely found yourself watching the most recent season of Outer Banks, which held onto first place for the second straight week after its already impressive debut. The most recent season of The Lincoln Lawyer didn’t have such an impressive debut, settling for second place with 59 million hours viewed during its first week on the platform. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” is the little rom-com series that keeps on going, Nobody Wants This, adding another 27 million hours viewed during its fourth straight week at the top of the series chart.

Next week, it’s more awards hopefuls with A Real Pain and Here debuting at various levels of limited release. Check your local theaters to see which, if either, are playing near you or catch up on a movie you haven’t seen yet while you can.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
