The Marvels Brings Record-Low Opening for Marvel Studios

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

It turns out Marvel’s name isn’t quite the ticket to success that it used to be anymore. The Marvels opened to a record-low for the studio with just $47 million domestically and $110 million globally, which still earned it number one at the box office at least. While these numbers might be what some studios dream about, for the former juggernaut, this is the lowest point of a troubling trend at the box office. This blew away Five Nights at Freddy’s, which snagged second place with $9 million, but as I mentioned last week, everything that movie makes is just extra at this point anyway. Finally, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” continuing to impress with its stamina, bringing in another $5.9 million for a domestic total of $172.5 million to date. This gives it a real chance to begin charting on the Top 10 for the year, as it will be passing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny any day now, which will put it in 11th place. For context, this weekend it beat out Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, so this is all quite the achievement for Taylor Swift.

Over on the Netflix charts, Locked In was the number one movie this week with 17.8 million views in its debut. This forced Pain Hustlers to settle for second place for a second week in a row, itself only earning 15.2 million views. Finally, Cold Pursuit actually climbed up the charts in its second week to round out the “Top of the Top 10” with 8.8 million views. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse debuted in fourth place, but its impressive box office likely all but makes up for that to Sony.

As far as shows are concerned, All the Light We Cannot See had an impressive debut at the top of the chart with 37.6 million hours viewed. True crime fans came out to support Till Murder Do Us Part: Soering vs. Haysom to the tune of 15.2 million hours viewed. Unfortunately, this meant Bodies took a bit of a dip this week, but it was still able to round out the “Top of the Top 10” in third place. This isn’t nearly as bad as how far Get Gotti had to fall as true crime fans swapped ships and left that to settle for sixth place this week.

Next week, we might actually get to see an entirely new “Top of the Top 10” as studios hope to get ahead of the upcoming holiday. New releases will include The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Trolls Band Together, and horror/slasher film Thanksgiving. It’ll be interesting to see where these all rank and what it’ll mean for The Marvels in its second weekend.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
