The Box Office is Alive Again

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Jack Black and Awkwafina continued their reign at the top of the box office as Kung Fu Panda 4 edged out Dune: Part Two with an additional $30 million domestically for an impressive 48% drop in its second weekend. This propelled the movie past the $100 million mark domestically, with $107.7 million to date. Dune: Part Two was just behind it with $29.1 million in its third weekend, with a fantastic 37% drop, bringing its domestic total to $205.3 million and its global total to $494.7 million. Arthur and the King, starring Mark Wahlberg, rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with $7.5 million in its debut weekend.

Over on the Netflix charts, Damsel debuted at number one with 35 million views. This is excellent news for Millie Bobby Brown as she continues to branch out from her Stranger Things identity. This bumped last week’s winner, Code 8: Part II, down to second place with an additional 11 million views in its second week. Finally, Spaceman is proving to be a bit of a slow burn with 10 million views in its second week, as Adam Sandler proves he still has some legs on Netflix after all.

As far as shows are concerned, The Gentlemen was the first show to unseat the Gaang with its debut of 81 million hours viewed. Don’t fret too much, though, as Avatar: The Last Airbender took second place with 65 million hours viewed in its third week. Plus, the show’s already been greenlit to finish the story, which should provide some solace. Finally, the dedicated community of true crime fans on Netflix launched The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping to third place, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” with 22 million hours viewed in its opening week.

Next week, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hopes to take first place as it enters the race at the multiplex. Meanwhile, Immaculate hopes to at least scavenge a spot in the “Top of the Top 10” somewhere during its debut.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
