Sony Celebrates Impressive Hold as the Industry Slows Down Before the Holidays

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Venom: The Last Dance brought some good news to Sony during a slow cycle at the box office. The comic book flick enjoyed a 49% drop adding $26.1 million to its $90 million domestic total and $317 million global total. The Wild Robot continues to run its box office marathon, bringing an additional $7.5 million to its domestic total of $121.4 million. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” Smile 2 secured $6.8 million with a similarly impressive 29% drop, bringing its domestic total to $52.6 million.

Over on the Netflix charts, it was mostly the same names as last week. Don’t Move debuted on the platform at the top of the charts with over 20 million views. Meanwhile, Woman of the Hour stayed put in second place with 13.2 million more views in its second week. Speaking of movies staying put, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare similarly remained stable to round out the “Top of the Top 10” with 7.2 million views this week.

Meanwhile, the series chart wasn’t even close this week. The Lincoln Lawyer’s most recent season exploded to first place with 72 million hours viewed in its second week on the platform. Meanwhile, true crime fans rallied behind This Is the Zodiac Speaking with 17 million hours viewed, further demonstrating the gap between first and second place. While it’s not the most impressive debut, at least Territory was able to chart during its first week, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Next week, there’s something for everyone from horror to holidays. Heretic and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever will both release, hoping to land at the top of the charts.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
