North American Box Office Fails to Surpass $100 Million Total in Painfully Slow Weekend

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Unlike its competition, Weapons is just printing money at this point. Not only did it hold onto first place during its second weekend, but it only fell 43% adding $25 million to its $89 million domestic and $148.7 million global box office against its mere $38 million budget. Unfortunately for Disney, the same can’t be said about Freakier Friday, which fell 49% and added $14.5 million to its disappointing $54.7 million domestic and $86.2 million global, signaling another week where it failed to break even. Like I hinted last week, Nobody 2 had nobody show up, earning a pitiful $9.2 million domestic and $14.1 million global total, and only rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” due to the painful underperformance of the North American box office.

Over on the Netflix charts, it’s an entirely different story. While the multiplex might be struggling to tread water, the same titles repeated their success in a slightly different order, starting with My Oxford Year, which finally climbed to first place with 27.2 million views in its second week. KPop Demon Hunters is not only second (again) on this chart, but it’s also sprinted to second on the all-time movies chart with another 25.9 million views in its eighth consecutive week at the top of the charts. Adam Sandler fans have nothing to worry about, though, because Happy Gilmore 2 snatched up the last spot with 14.7 million more views, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Jenna Ortega might play a miserable character, but the actress is probably doing her happiest dance as we speak. Both seasons of Wednesday dominated the charts this week, starting with the second season, which garnered 50 million views during its debut week. The first season of Wednesday was right behind it in placement but nowhere near it in view,s with only 8.6 million left for it when the dust finally settled. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” UNTAMED still has some juice left in it, celebrating four straight weeks at the top of the charts with another 7.2 million views specific to this week.

Next week, buckle up because you’re probably going to see the same movies discussed again. That’s because Ne Zha 2 leads a mediocre lineup, which also includes Honey Don’t!, Eden, and Splitsville, none of which have what it takes to unseat Weapons

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
