Design Your Bathroom for Aging in Place

According to the AARP, almost 90% of adults aged 65 or older want to stay in their homes as they age. But to do this, it’s critical to have a safe and functional space. Bathrooms can often be a challenge for aging bodies, so we have a few ideas for how to transform your bathroom to allow you to age in place.

Walk-in shower with bench

Replace traditional bathtubs with a walk-in shower for easier access. Include a built-in bench and hand-held showerhead to enhance safety and comfort for individuals with limited mobility.

Nonslip flooring

Safety is paramount in bathrooms, especially for aging individuals. Opt for nonslip flooring materials to minimize the risk of falls. Textured tiles or anti-slip vinyl are great options that combine safety with style.

Grab bars and railings

Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower and bathtub area. These provide support and stability, helping prevent slips and falls. Choose grab bars that complement your bathroom’s design for a seamless look.

Raised toilet seat

Consider a toilet with a higher seat to make sitting and standing more manageable for individuals with mobility challenges. Comfort height toilets are designed specifically for this purpose. You can also add a raised seat to an existing toilet.

Good lighting and contrasting colors

Ensure the bathroom is well lit to prevent accidents. Use contrasting colors for the floor, walls and fixtures to help those with visual impairments navigate the space more easily.
