Captain America: Brave New World Opening Provides Bleak Outlook for Marvel’s Future

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
The newest entry to the MCU continued the downward trend of openings for Marvel openings. Captain America: Brave New World debuted with $88.5 million domestically and $192 million globally, underperforming numerous previous Marvel movies that were considered flops. It wasn’t the bleakest opening this week, though, as that honor went to Paddington in Peru with $13 million domestically and $128.8 globally. Hopefully, they’ll take a similar path as Heart Eyes has been following, actually increasing its revenue from last week with $10 million added to its $21.5 million domestic total to round out the “Top of the Top 10.”
Kinda Pregnant took advantage of the lack of competition in a slow week of new movies. The Amy Schumer-led comedy debuted with 25 million views, earning it first place. The party is still in full swing for Cameron Diaz, though, as she was in two of the top movies this week, starting with Back in Action with 9.2 million views in its fourth week. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” Shrek climbed the charts after eleven weeks in the top ten with 7.3 million views, notably followed by the sequel.
The series chart continued to see double this week. The Night Agent held first place with another 7.5 million views in its third week. Meanwhile, surprisingly not the same show, The Recruit, had 6.1 million views in its second week. Staying put from last week, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” for a second straight week was American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson, with 4.5 million more views during its second week on the platform.
Next week, horror fans hope to rally behind The Monkey, while faith-based audiences are putting their money on The Unbreakable Boy. We’ll see if either can unseat the newest MCU film or if Marvel will continue embarrassing itself.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
