Both Newcomers Failed to Secure Number-One Spot as America Stayed Home to Watch Super Bowl LIX

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Talk about a RUFF week at the box office. Despite holding onto first place for the second week in a row, Dog Man fell 62% and added only $13.7 million to its $54.1 million total. Heart Eyes couldn’t scare enough people to unseat it, only debuting with $8.5 million at the box office. And, unfortunately for Ke Huy Quan, Love Hurts debuted even lower at $5.8 million, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Over on the Netflix charts, it’s still a party for Cameron Diaz. Back in Action held onto first place for its third week in a row with another 18.4 million views. Old favorite, The Sentinel, debuted on Netflix in second place with 7.9 million views. Babysitting content continues to be an excellent source of views for Netflix as Under the Boardwalk rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with 5.8 million views in its debut on the platform.

Things are looking a little better for The Night Agent, but not by much. It held first place in its second week on the platform and managed to do better than last week’s total, with another 15.2 million views. This allowed it to fend off the debut of the second season of The Recruit with plenty of breathing room above its 5.9 million views. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” I guess some people had a different type of football fever as American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson debuted with 5.5 million views.

Next week, Captain America: Brave New World and Paddington in Peru both make their entrances. While it’s a guarantee that the former will take first place at the box office, the dominant questions about Marvel’s future will be decided by what that number looks like.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
