Wonka Has Arrived, and the Numbers Are Sweet

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Wonka, led by Timothée Chalamet and Hugh Grant, arrived in style at the box office during its opening weekend. It debuted at number one, bringing in an additional $39 million domestically to its $112.4 million overseas for a total of $151.4 million. This movie blew everything else out of the water as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was in second place with only $5.8 million (to be fair, that movie has been out for a while, though). Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” is last week’s first-place winner, The Boy and the Heron, which added $5.1 million for a total of $23.1 million.

Over on the Netflix charts, as far as movies are concerned, Leave the World Behind debuted in first place with 41 million views. These numbers are looking good for the Obama family should they want to continue to produce more content for Netflix in the future. As for the rest of the chart, Family Switch finally beat out Leo this week, adding 18 million views to its total. This pushed Leo to third place in its third week in the “Top of the Top 10” with 14 million views.

Meanwhile, for streaming shows, Obliterated climbed from third place to first place during its second week with 61 million hours viewed, continuing the trend of good news for the series. Just below that is the debut of My Life with the Walter Boys, which earned 57 million hours viewed in its own right. Finally, Squid Game: The Challenge rounds out the “Top of the Top 10” with 54 million views in its third week at the top of the charts.

Next week, tons of pictures will be fighting it out for your selection. These range from the Aquaman sequel to The Iron Claw, Anyone But You, or Migration, so you are definitely spoiled for choice this week. If you want to stay at home, Maestro will also be available on streaming on Wednesday. With all these new releases hitting theaters simultaneously, you can expect the first shook-up “Top of the Top 10” at the box office in a few weeks, which will be a welcome change.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
