One of the greatest rivalries in the NFL over the past handful of years has been the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. This past weekend the Chiefs yet again eliminated the Bills from the playoffs. At this point it seems like this rivalry is pretty one sided.

Since Buffalo’s star quarterback Josh Allen became a star in just his second year in the NFL during the 2019-2020 season, the Bills have yet to make it to the Super Bowl. This has been  despite four first place finishes in the AFC South and having arguably one of the most talented teams in the league every year.

One of the main reasons for the Bills downfall every year has been the roadblock that is the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC. Now, for the third time in four seasons, the Bills have been eliminated from the playoffs by Kansas City. In each of those four seasons most would say the Bills have been a top three team, if not top two, in the conference, but they have failed to take the final leap into the Super Bowl.

Every year fans are eager for whenever a Buffalo and Kansas City matchup arises. We have seen some spectacular games over the years and sometimes Buffalo has even beat Kansas City, but not in the playoffs. Earlier this season the Bills got the best of Kansas City, as well as last year, and the year before that. All in regular season games. Buffalo just cannot beat them when it matters in the playoffs.

Some of the playoff matchups between these two teams have been extremely close, including the one this year. Not to make any excuses for the Bills but a late missed field goal from a makeable distance and multiple dropped passes were not prevalent in the regular season but occurred in this game. Whether that is bad luck or bad execution, it was the downfall of the Bills.

Moving forward the Bills should be able to keep this main core roster intact. For the past four years this team has been seen as one of the top preseason picks to win the Super Bowl, but they haven’t even made an appearance in the game. Next year will likely be more of the same early in the year with people pegging the Bills as one of the top teams in the league but hopefully with a different result come this time next season.
