The Box Office is a Literal Wasteland Just in Time for Dune: Part Two

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

The multiplex was a bit barren this weekend in what will hopefully be one of the last weekends where the effects of the strike are being felt. This allowed Bob Marley: One Love to hang onto number one for the second straight week, adding $13.5 million to its $71.1 million domestic total while only suffering a 51% drop. Demon Slayer took second place this weekend, opening to the tune of $11.5 million, placing it on par with other releases from the franchise. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” Ordinary Angels brought in $6.5 million in its opening weekend, a testament to how little is needed to place in the “Top of the Top 10” these days. Unfortunately, Madame Web couldn’t even sling up two weeks in a row at the top of the charts with those low standards after suffering a 61% drop, signaling a new low for Marvel.

Over on the Netflix charts, they had you covered this Valentine’s Day, with Players debuting in first place, earning 16 million views. Meanwhile, if you wanted a darker take on the holiday, Lover, Stalker, Killer provided an apparently viable alternative with 14 million views of its own, keeping it at the top of the charts for the second week in a row. This left last week’s winner, Despicable Me 3, to round out the “Top of the Top 10” in third place with 10 million views in its second week. Clearly, there was something for everyone this Valentine’s Day.

If you were looking to binge, One Day took first place on those charts with a whopping 66 million hours viewed in its second week since debuting, climbing up from its third-place position last week. This left the new season of Love is Blind to settle for second place in its debut, with 39 million hours viewed. Finally, Griselda continues to hang on as it earned another 32 million hours viewed in its fourth week, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.” Sofía Vergara really brought a gold mine to Netflix with this show.

Next week, Dune: Part Two will finally make its star-studded landing, which will surely debut at number one. It’s just a question of how much money it will wind up making at this point.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
