The Beekeeper Buzzes to Number One

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

As we hinted at last week, the Box Office succumbed to the effects of last year’s strikes, offering no new wide releases this week to choose from. This proved to be great news for the team at The Beekeeper, which was able to buzz past the lack of competition to number one for its first week since release. This weekend, it added $7.4 million to its $42.2 million domestic total, sporting an impressive 14% drop, providing a massive win for Statham and company. Unfortunately, this meant that the musical adaptation of Mean Girls had to settle for second place in its third weekend, dropping 37% and only adding $7.3 million to its $60.8 million domestic total, placing it significantly behind the classic’s box office total without even adjusting for inflation. Wonka rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” as the only movie to continue to offer genuinely impressive numbers, adding $5.9 million to its $195.1 million domestic total and $552 million global total during its seventh weekend at the box office.

Over on the Netflix charts, Lift continues to dominate, with 36 million views in its second week. The Legend of Tarzan returned to the streaming platform to the tune of 7.9 million views. That’s not too shabby for a movie that’s eight years old. The Kitchen rounded out the “Top of the Top 10,” debuting with 5.6 million views.

True crime and thriller content dominated the series charts as American Nightmare took first place in its debut to the tune of 48 million hours viewed. This meant the massive hit Fool Me Once had to dip to second place, which is still impressive given that it entered its third week on the charts and it’s still at the very top. Harlan Coben can surely expect to continue his lucrative partnership with the studio after bringing in numbers like he has. Finally, Boy Swallows Universe climbed the charts during its second week to round out the “Top of the Top 10” with 27 million hours viewed.

Next week, the only new movie in town is Henry Cavill’s Argylle, with a star-studded cast supporting him. We’ll see if it’s able to take first place in a weak competition pool this weekend.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
