Smile 2 Takes First Place in Slow Weekend at The Box Office
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
While Smile 2 secured a first-place debut, it wasn’t a particularly exciting week at the Box Office, and it was another horrible week for the Joker sequel. Smile 2 brought in $23 million at the domestic box office, which is on par with the first movie. The Wild Robot continued to be a marathon performer, surpassing $100 million domestically by adding another $10 million to its total with an impressive 28% hold. People can’t seem to get enough of Terrifier 3 as the highly-discussed horror flick added another $9.3 million to its $36.2 million domestic total, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”
Over on the Netflix charts, Erik and Lyle Menendez continue to bring in audiences. New documentary film, The Menendez Brothers, debuted at the top of the charts with more than 22 million views. The powerful pairing of horror and romance dominated the rest of the Top 10 with 2018’s The Predator debuting on the platform with 12.9 million views. Lonely Planet rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” on a romantic note with 11 million views.
As far as series were concerned, it was mostly the usual suspects here. The only newcomer was the fourth season of Outer Banks which debuted with 62 million hours viewed. Nobody Wants This edged out its true-crime competition for the second week in a row with another 42 million hours viewed this week. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” was Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, potentially finalizing an incredible four-week-long run on top.
Next week, Venom: The Last Dance has its fingers crossed to fare better than fellow DC film Joker: Folie à Deux did. Award darling Conclave also hopes to enter the conversation.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
