Second Weekend Continues the Bad News for Marvel

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

If Marvel hoped for Captain America: Brave New World to have a slow-burning success, the second-weekend numbers crushed those. The latest addition to the MCU suffered a 68% drop, adding only $28.2 million to its $141.2 million domestic and $289 million global totals, which might sound good but not for a Marvel movie. Despite having less competition than previous Marvel flops, it’s still underperforming them, with its only competition being The Monkey and its measly $14.2 million opening. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” Paddington in Peru never materialized domestically as it had overseas, with only $6.5 million added to its $25.2 million domestic total.

Over on the Netflix charts, it turns out that Scott Foley can still bring an audience to something. Starring alongside Maia Reficco, La Dolce Villa snagged first place during its debut with 19.8 million views. Kinda Pregnant held in there at second place with another 13.7 million views. Meanwhile, Aftermath enjoyed a bit of a resurgence since dropping on Netflix with 9.9 million views during its first week, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

The series charts were pretty quiet this week. Surviving Black Hawk Down was, to its credit, able to debut in first place but only with 7.9 million views. Unfortunately, the news about Cobra Kai seemed to fall on deaf ears, as it only spiked up to second place with 5.9 million views. Another limited series, Apple Cider Vinegar, rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” by climbing the charts in its second week on the platform with 5.6 million views.

Next week, it’s another layup week for Captain America: Brave New World, with only Last Breath and its nonexistent advertising debuting in theaters. We’ll see if Marvel decides actually to capitalize on it.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
