Mickey 17 Is DOA as the Box Office Continues to Struggle

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Bong Joon-ho doesn’t have another Parasite on his hands with his newest theatrical release. Mickey 17 opened to very mediocre reception, both commercially and critically, with $19.1 million domestically and $53.3 million globally despite its $118 million budget. Continuing on the bad news train, Captain America: Brave New World only added $8.5 million to its $176.5 million domestic and $370.7 million globally, ensuring it will be a loss for the studio and one of the least successful entries to the MCU. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” Last Breath might not be making a lot of money, but it was at least inexpensive to produce, adding $4.2 million to its $14.6 million domestic total against a $23 million budget.

Over on the Netflix charts, there wasn’t an original movie in sight. Venom: The Last Dance led the pack with 12 million views after landing on the platform this week. Babysitting content took it from there, with Despicable Me 4 entering the chat with 8.8 million views. This left its predecessor, Despicable Me 3, to round out the “Top of the Top 10” with 6.9 million views.

At least the series chart picked up the slack regarding original content being a part of the discussion. Last week’s first and second-place entries swapped, as Zero Day climbed up to first place with 17.9 million views in its second week. American Murder: Gabby Petito dipped to second place in its second week with 11.3 million views. Kate Hudson-led comedy Running Point debuted on the platform with 9.3 million views, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Next week, the only new movie worth mentioning is Novocaine, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not even a part of the discussion for us. Hopefully, I’ll be proven wrong.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
