Kung Fu Panda Still Has Some Moves After All

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Kung Fu Panda 4 made a much more significant impact than was expected until recently, unseating Dune: Part Two to take first place at the box office with $58.3 million in its opening weekend. Dune: Part Two fans still have plenty to celebrate, though, as it had a very impressive 44% drop in its second weekend, taking second place by adding $46 million to its $157 million domestic total. This brings its global total to $367.5 million, which is terrific news for all involved. Finally, small-budget horror movies still have a home at the box office, as Imaginary brought in $10 million in its debut, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Over on the Netflix charts, for movies at least, Code 8: Part II debuted in first place with 20 million views. This brought last week’s winner, Mea Culpa, down to second place, adding another 18.5 million views to its total during its second week. That’s still a wonderful hold for Tyler Perry and Kelly Rowland. Adam Sandler didn’t have the good week they had, though, as Spaceman rounded out the “Top of the Top 10,” debuting with only 8.8 million views in a rare miss for Sandler on Netflix these days.

When it comes to shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender continued to dominate, with an additional 144 million hours viewed in its second week. In more good news for fans of the series, Netflix has officially greenlit two more seasons of the show, which will provide a conclusion to the series as long as it follows the original animated series’ footsteps. Love is Blind might not have been able to secure a number-one spot for its sixth season, but it was consistently at the top of the charts somewhere, taking second place this week with 57.5 million hours viewed. Speaking of long runs at the top of the charts, One Day continues to be at the top, with another 32 million hours viewed in its fourth week.

Next week, the only real entry to the multiplex will be Mark Wahlber’s Arthur the King, hoping to see some of the big bucks that other movies are enjoying.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
