Inside Out 2 Brings the Summer Box Office Back to Life

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

The multiplex can breathe a sigh of relief as Inside Out 2 delivered the traffic it has been looking for all summer. The animated sequel achieved the biggest domestic box office total since Barbie with $155 million, for a $295 million worldwide total. Meanwhile, Bad Boys: Ride or Die had a very impressive hold, adding $33 million to its $112.2 million domestic total with an impressive 42% drop since its debut. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes climbed its way back to the top of the charts, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” with $5.2 million for a domestic total of $157.8 million.

Over on the Netflix charts, it seems like Glenn Powell didn’t have the box office capital the industry thought he did following Anyone But You after all. His new movie, Hit Man, debuted to very soft numbers with only 10.8 million views. Speaking of bad news, Jennifer Lopez continues to struggle as well with Atlas only adding 8.9 million views in its third week on the charts, solidifying the movie’s mediocre fate. If you weren’t at the movies for babysitting content, Ice Age: Collision Course provided a wonderful alternative at home, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” with 4.8 million views in its third week.

Meanwhile, on the streaming charts, we finally have a new champion. Eric was able to unseat the most recent season of Bridgerton, climbing to first place with 54 million hours viewed in its second week. Fascinatingly, Geek Girl also moved its way up the charts to second place in its own second week on the platform, adding 41 million hours viewed to its total. Bridgerton fans need not worry, though, as it still found a home at the bottom of the “Top of the Top 10,” with 25 million hours viewed this week.

Next week, The Bikeriders and The Exorcism both seem unlikely to unseat Inside Out 2, but we’ll see which one of them takes second place. As such, all industry eyes will primarily be on Disney and Pixar’s second-weekend hold.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
