Hollywood’s Next Few Weeks Look Bleak, and No Forest Creatures Are Going to Save It

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Before we get into the rough original projections for Disney’s next live-action adaptation, let’s discuss how this week went. As I predicted last week, Novocaine didn’t make any waves at the box office, securing a sad first place with only $8.7 million. Mickey 17 dropped 60% from its already subpar opening, barely squeezing past Black Bag with $7.51 million in its second week at the box office for a $33.2 million domestic and $90.4 million global total in a near-guaranteed loss for the studio. This left newcomer Black Bag to round out the “Top of the Top 10” with a $7.5 million opening weekend.

The fascinating mix of babysitting content and true crime continues to reign supreme on Netflix. Starting with the former, Plankton: The Movie debuted at the top of the charts with 14.3 million views. Despicable Me 4, and the rest of the franchise, continues to prove itself as a valuable acquisition for Netflix, with 10.1 million views in its second week on the platform. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” the latter offered Chaos: The Manson Murders debuted with 5 million views.

It was an excellent week for Kate Hudson on the series chart. Not only did Running Point climb to first place in its second week with 12.2 million views, but it has also already been renewed for season two. Zero Day continues to be a strong performer, with another 7.5 million views for its third consecutive week at the top of the charts. Toxic Town climbed the charts during its second week with 4.7 million views, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Next week, the tune Disney whistles on its way to work doesn’t look like it will be a good one. Initial projections have Snow White opening up with less than $50 million on the heels of the political controversy surrounding the film, which would be an undeniable loss for the studio, so we’ll see what happens.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
