Godzilla x Kong Makes a Huge Impact During Debut
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made a huge impact as it stomped its way into theaters this week. This was a huge win for everyone involved as it far exceeded the expected opening. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire didn’t have such a nice weekend, as it suffered a 65% drop in its second weekend for a measly $73.4 million total to date domestically. At least Dune: Part Two was able to have a better hold at just 37% for a whopping $252.3 million domestically and $626 million globally to round out the “Top of the Top 10.”
Over on the Netflix charts, Irish Wish climbed its way to number one with 25 million views in its second week on the platform. Lindsay Lohan is proving herself to be back on the scene with this and the rumored recent Freaky Friday 2 confirmation. This brought Damsel down to second place in its third week, adding another 19 million views to its total. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” was Shooter, which climbed up the charts in its fifth week, proving it’s never too late to get up here with another 5 million views.
When it comes to shows, The Gentlemen continues to dominate with another 78 million hours viewed in its third week on the charts. Unfortunately, big-budget 3 Body Problem wasn’t able to unseat The Gentlemen during its debut and was forced to settle for right behind it in second place. To be fair, though, it only had a weekend to work with based on when the show debuted whereas The Gentlemen had the whole week to rally up those hours. Finally, Homicide: New York rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with 29 million hours viewed during its debut week.
Next week, it’s a tale of two very similar posters as The First Omen and Monkey Man both enter the race at the multiplex. It’ll be interesting to see if either of them can put up a fight against the two giants at the top.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
