Ghostbusters Claims Number One in a Competitive Box Office

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

It turns out that America was so down to call Ghostbusters, as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire drove its Ectomobile to number one at the box office. This outperformed the first installation of the revamped franchise, which was a welcome victory after it started its weekend numbers looking like it wouldn’t. This bumped Dune: Part Two to second place, adding $17.6 million to its $233.3 million domestic total for an impressive 38% drop in its fourth weekend. This made Kung Fu Panda 4 bump down two spots off its throne to round out the “Top of the Top 10” in third place, with $16.8 million in its third weekend.

On Netflix, Damsel continued its dominance with another 50 million views in its second week on the charts. This is especially impressive because it went up compared to its debut week, spelling good news for Millie Bobby Brown. Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan continues to make her comeback with Irish Wish, debuting to the tune of 19 million views. Finally, if you were looking for a thriller, Alone was seemingly a viable option as it debuted with 5 million views.

When it comes to shows, The Gentlemen’s debut season continues to be a real winner for the platform, maintaining its number-one spot with an additional 134 million hours viewed in its second week. The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender kept flying high in the charts, retaking second place with another 37 million hours viewed in its fourth straight week at the top. Consistently from last week, The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping, rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with another 10 million hours viewed, taking home third place for the second week in a row.

Next week, Godzilla stomps into theaters with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. We’ll see where it will land when the dust settles from the big clash.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
