Feeling the Effects of the Strikes at the Box Office
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
At the box office, the effects of the strikes are on display with the lack of competition and the lack of money being spent at the multiplex. The recent musical adaptation of Mean Girls held onto first place but fell 59% in its second weekend to only add $11.7 million for a measly $50 million domestic total. Given the movie’s small budget, it will still be a victory for Paramount, but these plastics will likely not be able to get in with the original plastics as far as performance at the box office is concerned. Just like last week, The Beekeeper grabbed second place, adding another $8.4 million to its $31.1 million total at the domestic box office, sporting a 49% dip in its second week. The only real winner of the “Top of the Top 10” is Wonka, which continues to exceed $500 million at the global box office, with another $6.4 million added to its domestic total this past weekend.
On the Netflix charts, Lift took first place on the movies chart with 32 million views in its debut week. This far outshines the other debut at the top of the charts, Transporter 2, which only debuted to the tune of 5.8 million views. This barely beat out The Equalizer 3, which rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with 5.7 million views. Notably, Leo is still on the charts after 8 straight weeks, another cap in the feather for Adam Sandler’s partnership with Netflix.
Meanwhile, on the streaming charts, Fool Me Once continues its dominance in the second week on the charts. This week, specifically, it added another whopping 153 million hours viewed to its total, a considerable accomplishment for Harlan Coben and a good sign for future projects between the author and the streaming juggernaut. The Brothers Sun could only hope for those numbers, but it could at least climb to second place in its second week to the tune of 50 million hours viewed. Recent events seemingly inspired viewers’ habits as the Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich limited series found its way back to the charts, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” with 15 million hours viewed this week.
Next week, the box office is a ghost town with no significant new releases slated for this weekend. There’s always football at least, and there are also a bunch of digital releases for new movies for your consideration. Other than that, though, the recent strikes are definitely making its presence known at the box office. Regardless, we will be here to discuss the performance of everything involved.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
