Dune: Part Two Exceeds Expectations in its Opening Weekend

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Dune: Part Two dominated the box office this weekend with a party that brought in $81.5 million during its opening weekend. With people even willing to see the movie in the early hours of the morning, it was actually able to exceed industry expectations, which is terrific news for Warner Bros. This left Bob Marley: One Love to take second place, adding $7.4 million to its $82.7 million domestic total with an impressive 45% drop during its third week on the charts. Ordinary Angels rounded out the “Top of the Top 10,” adding $3.8 million to its $12.5 million domestic total during its second week on the charts.

Over on the Netflix charts, Mea Culpa debuted in first place with 16 million views. Tyler Perry clearly still has the ability to deliver movies that people are willing to watch. This bumped last week’s big winner, Players, to second place with another 7.4 million views in its second week. Meanwhile, new entry to the “Top of the Top 10,” Einstein and the Bomb, climbed up its spot from last week to round it out in third place.

As far as streaming was concerned, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted with an impressive 153 million hours viewed, with fans having mixed opinions on whether it lived up to the original animated series. This bumped One Day down to second place this time around with 50 million hours viewed in its third weekend on the charts. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” was Love is Blind, which has yet to secure a number-one spot, spelling potential trouble for the series. All eyes will be on how Aang can keep flight in his second weekend on the charts when determining whether a season for book two is possible for Avatar: The Last Airbender

Next week, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Imaginary hope to cash in on some of this new life being seen at the multiplex. We’ll see what kind of a dent, if any, they can make on Dune: Part Two.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
