Box Office Dries Up to New Lows During Super Bowl Weekend

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

You could hear crickets at the box office this weekend, as the number one movie made only $6.5 million. Argyle was at least able to find a silver lining by holding onto number one at the box office, but the complete picture is that it suffered a 63% drop and has only made $28.8 million domestically on a $200 million investment. Lisa Frankenstein debuted to the tune of $3.8 million, earning it second place at the box office. This spells a quick theatrical window, as the studio will likely look to get it on digital sooner rather than later so that people will watch it somewhere. The Beekeeper continues to be the little movie that could, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” adding $3.4 million to its $54.7 million domestic total.

Over on the Netflix charts, two new movies debuted in the “Top of the Top 10” this week. The Greatest Night in Pop debuted with 11 million views. If that wasn’t your style, maybe Orion and the Dark intrigued you more, as it came in right behind that with 10 million views. Kevin Hart held onto a spot in the “Top of the Top 10” as Lift took third place, adding 8.2 million views to its impressive total.

As far as series were concerned, Griselda had a wonderful second week with another 114 million hours viewed in its second week. This is terrific news for Sofía Vergara’s potential to deliver more content to the streaming service. It completely blew out the second-place winner, Alexander: the Making of a God’s debut season, which had 27 million hours viewed. We’ll see how word of mouth assists the show’s debut in future weeks. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10” was longtime resident American Nightmare, which added another 12 million hours to its total during its third week at the top of the charts.

Next week, Madame Web and Bob Marley: One Love will be duking it out for your hard-earned box office. Alternatively, the next few episodes of The Chosen, which you might remember as the surprise entry to last week’s “Top of the Top 10,” so I couldn’t neglect to mention it this time, which should all be able to make for an interesting shakeup to the charts.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
