Box Office Continues to Drag along through 2025

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Captain America: Brave New World continued its mediocre performance. The Marvel hero could only add another measly $15 million to its $163.6 million domestic total, all but ensuring its status as a lost investment for Disney. Last Breath, starring Woody Harrelson, was actually pretty impressive, especially considering its lack of advertising, bringing $7.8 million to shore during its debut weekend. Horror fans continued to uplift The Monkey, which added $6.3 million to its $24.5 million domestic total in its second weekend, rounding out the “Top of the Top 10.”

Netflix was equally boring this week. The only original film was La Dolce Villa, which at least kept first place for a second straight week with another 14 million views. The rest of the movies were previously released films that were on the charts in some capacity or another but just climbed up, starting with Uncharted in second place with 10.5 million views. Babysitting content rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with Despicable Me 3 amassing 7.9 million views after six weeks on the charts.

Conspiracy and true crime fans came out in droves on the series chart. American Murder: Gabby Petito about the tragic murder of Gabby Petito in 2021 was the talk of the town with 31 million views during its debut week. This left the other two debuts in the dust, as Zero Day got an impressive 19 million views, likely on the backing of Robert Deniro’s star power. Rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” The Search for Instagram’s Worst Con Artist had 5.5 million views during its first week.

Next week, Mickey 17 is the only real entry to the competition, but it doesn’t look like it’ll have that much fight in it. We’ll see if it can at least outperform an already weak box office.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
