Bob Marley: One Love Captures the Hearts of America

Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.

Valentine’s Day Weekend was undoubtedly a tale of two very different openings. First, Bob Marley: One Love struck a chord with audiences who rallied it to a $27.7 million opening weekend, with $51 million during the entire long weekend, earning it first place at the box office this week. Meanwhile, though, Madame Web helped bring comic book movies to a new low with $15.1 million in its opening weekend and $25.8 million during the entire long weekend for a second-place finish. Speaking of box office bombs, Argylle fell another 25% and only added $4.7 million to its $36.4 million total, which doesn’t even make a dent in the $200 million investment that the movie was to make.

Over on the Netflix charts, Despicable Me 3 continues to be a crowd pleaser as it debuted on the service in first place with 15 million views. This forced Orion and the Dark to stay put in second place for the second week in a row, adding another 12 million views to its total. At least it fared better than The Greatest Night in Pop, which fell all the way down to eighth place, though. The other entry that took its place in the “Top of the Top 10” this week was Lover, Stalker, Killer, which proved once again that true crime has a devoted audience on the platform.

For the television section, Griselda is on top for its third straight week, with another 56 million hours viewed being added to its total. You can surely expect to see more of Sofía Vergara on Netflix in the future with these impressive numbers. The first season of The Tourist climbed to second place on the charts this week, which is always good news for a debut, adding 38 million hours viewed to its total. Limited series One Day rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with 35 million hours viewed.

Next week, the only newcomers to the ring will be Ordinary Angels and Demon Slayer as everyone braces themselves for Dune: Part Two to arrive, which studios are hoping will be a huge arrival.

Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
