Barbenheimer Continues to Reign Supreme
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
The doll who can be anything continues to prove it as she adds “Highest Domestic Grossing Movie of All Time Directed by a Woman” to its list of titles. The current global total for the juggernaut is $1.1 billion globally, with $526 million domestically ($33.7 million of which were this week).
The other pair of the event duo, Oppenheimer, climbed back to second place at the box office. Its global total is impressively sitting at $649 million, of which $264 is domestic. This week, it earned $18.8 million of that $264 million domestic total. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles knocked The Meg 2 out of the water (and out of the “Top of the Top 10”) with a great 44% drop in its second weekend and $15.7 million domestically. Unfortunately, The Last Voyage of the Demeter didn’t fare well on those waters. It opened with a bleak $6.5 million and placed fifth in the top 10 for its debut week.
Meanwhile, on streaming, Hidden Strike took first place on the movies chart for the second week in a row with 23 million additional views. Happiness for Beginners climbed up the ranks to second place, marking its second week in the Top 10 but its first week in our “Top of the Top 10,” with 13 million views. Finally, Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Movie based on the animated series of the same name with 12 million views.
When it comes to TV shows, The Lincoln Lawyer is number one again, with 55 million hours viewed for its most recent season. LGBTQ+ show, Heartstopper, had its most recent season debut this week and placed strongly at number two with 28 million hours viewed. This powerful debut knocked The Witcher down to third place, which is still an accomplishment given that it’s entering its sixth week in the top 10.
Next week, my eyes will be on Blue Beetle to see if DC’s issues will follow it or if it can knock Barbenheimer out of the top two spots. If that isn’t your thing, Strays will look to see if it can bring enough laughs to compete with everyone else.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
