Argylle Fails to Live Up to Its Budget
Welcome to another weekly installment of Couch Potato, where I go over what went down on the big and small screens so you can be a better-informed viewer.
At the box office, Apple wound up investing $200 million in another flop as Argylle did score a number-one debut but only to the sad tune of $18 million. Without spoiling anything for you, one has to wonder if some of the, let’s say, misleading advertising and resulting poor reviews for the movie are to blame or if the spy flick was doomed to fail from the start. Meanwhile, a surprise entry to the “Top of the Top 10” presented itself this week with season four of faith-based The Chosen debuting in theaters to $6 million in revenue. This knocked The Beekeeper down to third place after a lengthy run at the top of the charts adding $5.2 million to its $49.4 million domestic total, with an impressive 21% hold.
Over on the Netflix charts, Lift is still the talk of the town enjoying first place for its third straight week. It added another 17 million views to its total, which is quite the accomplishment for Kevin Hart and company. Newcomer, at least to Netflix, Mindcage found a second life on the streaming juggernaut debuting in second place with 9.1 million views. For the second week in a row, The Kitchen rounded out the “Top of the Top 10” with 7.7 million views being added to its total from last week.
As far as series are concerned, Sofía Vergara enjoyed a huge win this week with Griselda debuting at number one to the sweet tune of 113 million hours viewed. This can be the beginning of a beautiful partnership between the Modern Family alumnus and Netflix. This bumped previous top competitors each down one slot as American Nightmare took second place with a mere fraction of those numbers, adding 29 million hours viewed to its total this week. Harlan Coben continues his incredible success with Fool Me Once rounding out the “Top of the Top 10,” finding a spot at the top of the charts for its fourth straight week.
Next week, all eyes are on the Chiefs and the 49ers, which means there’s not much going on at the multiplex. The only new movie being released is Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams (yes, Robin Williams’ daughter). We’ll see if enough people don’t care about football to propel it to number one at the box office.
Stay tuned for that, and until next time, happy viewing!
